Spring Cleaning with AVIVA: 4 Simple Ways to Freshen Your Home

Welcome spring with fresh citrus, soft floral notes and warm woody aromas. These easy recipes combine AVIVA Bicarbonate of Soda and Essential Oils to freshen everyday spaces, from kitchen bins to laundry cupboards.

1. Freshen Your Bins

Give your bin a fresh citrus boost with Lime Essential Oil.

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 3–5 drops Lime Essential Oil

How to use:

Mix thoroughly, breaking up any clumps. Place in a small open container at the bottom of a clean, dry bin, beneath the liner. Keep the container upright to prevent spills.

Replace when the mixture becomes damp or the scent fades. Wash and dry your bin regularly to remove the source of unpleasant smells.

2. Freshen Carpets & Rugs

Pair the warm, woody aroma of Cedarwood with bright Lemon to refresh suitable carpets and rugs.

You’ll need:

  • 1 cup Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 2 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Lemon Essential Oil

How to use:

Mix well until the oils are evenly distributed and no damp clumps remain. Sprinkle lightly over the carpet, leave for 20–30 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly.

Patch test on a hidden area first and avoid delicate rugs. Only use if your carpet-care instructions and vacuum manufacturer permit fine powders.

3. Freshen Smelly Laundry

Towels sometimes need a little extra attention. Bicarbonate of Soda can be added to a suitable wash, while Tea Tree and Lavender offer a fresh aromatic touch.

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup Bicarbonate of Soda

How to use:

Add to the wash alongside your usual detergent, following your washing machine’s instructions and the fabric-care label. Avoid delicate fabrics.

For a Tea Tree and Lavender scent, choose a laundry product formulated for washing machines and follow its directions. Essential oils do not dissolve in water, so avoid adding them directly to the wash or onto fabrics.

Dry towels thoroughly before folding and storing them.

4. Make a Spring Fresh Room Jar

Bring a bright, floral aroma to a small space with Lemongrass and Geranium.

You’ll need:

  • ½ cup Bicarbonate of Soda
  • 5 drops Lemongrass Essential Oil
  • 3 drops Geranium Essential Oil
  • A small, stable jar

How to use:

Add the Bicarbonate of Soda to the jar, stir in the essential oils and mix thoroughly. Leave the jar open in a secure spot in your bathroom or laundry area, away from fabrics and surfaces that could be damaged by a spill.

Replace when damp and refresh when the scent fades.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Bring a Little Spring into Your Home

A few simple touches can make your regular cleaning routine feel fresh and inviting. Use essential oils sparingly, avoid breathing in the powder, and keep children and pets away from treated carpets until vacuuming is complete.
